ContactIn Grenoble, the Flaubert eco-neighborhood continues its transformation. Here, the goal seems simple on the surface: to restore pedestrians and nature to their rightful place. But in practice, this transformation requires a profound overhaul of public space.
It is in this context that ROUTIÈRE CHAMBARD is stepping in to transform a section of Gustave-Flaubert Street into a space with abundant greenery.
Transforming a barren space into a living environment
The project involves transforming a conventional road into a tranquil space integrated into an expanding urban park. This transformation radically changes how the area is used.
Where car traffic once dominated, there are now:
– Pedestrian paths
– Relaxation areas
– Plantings
This transformation illustrates a fundamental trend: rethinking the city to make it more livable and breathable.
Restoring soil permeability
One of the project’s major challenges involves water management. The site is designed to promote natural infiltration through permeable soils.
Ultimately, the goal is to have 70% of public areas be permeable.
Specifically, this involves:
– The creation of landscaped swales
– Open-air retention basins
– Features that promote rainwater absorption
This represents a significant change, especially given that extreme weather events are becoming increasingly intense.
A strong emphasis on plants
The transformation also involves large-scale greening:
– More than 200 trees
– Several hundred shrubs
– A variety of landscaped areas Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these plantings play an essential role:
– Cooling the urban environment
– Promoting biodiversity
– Improving user comfort
A Construction Project with Limited Space in a Densely Populated Area
Working in the heart of the city involves numerous challenges:
– Coexistence with other businesses
– Limited access
– The need to maintain traffic flow
The teams had to constantly adapt their organization while adhering to a demanding 18-month schedule.
A New Vision for the City
This project embodies a different approach to designing public space. The road infrastructure becomes a vehicle for urban transformation, serving residents and their environment.
A construction project that demonstrates that the city of tomorrow is built as much through large-scale projects as through the gradual transformation of its everyday spaces.
