ContactASTERIA: A Different Approach to Lighting to Bring About Lasting Change in the City
June 10, 2026For a long time, street lighting was viewed as merely a technical service. Today, it has become a true driver of transformation for local communities. Reducing energy consumption, improving the quality of life, and protecting the environment: these are all challenges that are now being addressed… at the level of a single streetlight.
With ASTERIA, BENTIN offers a renewed, more comprehensive, and more demanding approach to urban lighting. A landmark project, carried out with ENTRA as part of a performance-based contract for Plaine Commune in Seine-Saint-Denis.
A project that goes beyond mere modernization
ASTERIA is part of a ten-year contract set to begin in early 2026. This intentionally long-term approach ensures that initiatives are sustained over time.
It’s not just about renovating existing facilities. The goal is broader: to improve service while significantly reducing energy consumption.
This marks a shift from a maintenance-focused approach to one of transformation. Lighting is no longer viewed as a standalone piece of equipment, but as a system to be managed as a whole.
Smarter, More Adaptable Lighting
On the ground, the project is based primarily on a major modernization of the lighting infrastructure, involving the widespread deployment of LED fixtures.
But the real change lies elsewhere: in the ability to finely control the systems. Thanks to remote management, each light fixture can be adjusted in real time.
In practical terms, this makes it possible to adapt the lighting:
– based on schedules
– based on usage
– or based on natural light
The result: lighting that is just right—neither too bright nor too dim—and that truly meets the residents' needs.
Choosing Simplicity
One of ASTERIA’s major goals is to reduce energy consumption, with an expected decrease of more than 77%.
But beyond the numbers, it’s an approach that’s changing. The project is based on a simple philosophy: lighting better rather than lighting more.
This efficiency does not come at the expense of comfort. On the contrary, it improves the quality of the light, making it more pleasant, more uniform, and better integrated into its surroundings.
Incorporating the Challenges of Life
ASTERIA also incorporates an often-overlooked aspect: the impact of light on biodiversity.
The project takes into account the concept of a “dark corridor,” preserving areas where darkness is maintained to limit disturbances to nocturnal wildlife. The selection of lighting fixtures and lighting schemes is consistent with this approach:
– appropriate color temperatures
– controlled light levels
– overall considerations regarding nighttime lighting
Light thus becomes a balancing factor between human activity and respect for ecosystems.
A Tangible Benefit for Residents
While these issues may seem technical, their effects are very tangible for users.
Better-managed lighting means:
– fewer outages
– faster response times in the event of a malfunction
– lighting better suited to actual uses
It also provides a better living environment, with public spaces that are more accessible and comfortable.
Choosing a ten-year performance contract allows us to go beyond a simple one-time project.
It offers the following possibilities:
– to adjust the facilities over time
– to gradually improve performance
– to monitor changes in usage
Lighting is becoming a scalable system, capable of adapting to changes in the landscape.
With ASTERIA, street lighting is taking on a new role. It’s no longer just about providing light, but about making a tangible contribution to the energy transition.
The project demonstrates that it is possible to reconcile:
– energy efficiency
– quality of service
– environmental responsibility
A concrete example of how the transition isn't just about large-scale projects… but also about everyday infrastructure that has been thoroughly reimagined.
